Tony D'Angelo Discusses Behind The Scenes Factors In Character Shift
“It’s been fun. You know, I enjoy it because, I’ve said this before, but you know, the Don character, so to speak is just one part of who I am and who I was. Now we got this Tony D’Angelo, who’s a badass bruiser.— Tony D'Angelo

Tony D'Angelo revealed that backstage developments played a major role in both the dissolution of The Family and the evolution of his on-screen persona in WWE NXT. The group split in July of last year, which sent its members in separate directions and prompted D'Angelo to step away from NXT television for an extended period.

He returned to programming in February of this year sporting a fresh appearance, altered mannerisms, and a modified way of speaking. D'Angelo told Denise Salcedo that portraying the new version of his character has been enjoyable because it represents another facet of his personality.

He explained that the original Don character was only one side of who he is while the current Tony D'Angelo is a badass bruiser that also comes naturally to him. D'Angelo expressed gratitude that fans have supported him through the transition, acknowledging that such changes can sometimes feel strange for wrestlers and that the process involved stress and difficulty.

He noted that one practical benefit of the shift is no longer needing to remain clean-shaven, allowing him to grow a beard. The wrestler confirmed there was considerable behind-the-scenes activity that directly led to the breakup and the character adjustment, describing it as routine backstage occurrences rather than anything negative.

Following the hiatus, D'Angelo said the creative team pivoted and he returned as this updated version of himself, still functioning as an ass kicker. He disclosed that he underwent speech therapy because some viewers had trouble understanding his previous accent, with WWE covering the cost so he could now speak more clearly.
