Paul Heyman Reveals How He Violated WCW Contract For Undertaker
“I could not have disagreed with him any more.— Paul Heyman
Paul Heyman revealed he was the person who violated his WCW contract to help The Undertaker sign with WWE. The Undertaker, whose real name is Mark Calaway, had completed a one-year stint with WCW and signed with WWE in October 1990.
Heyman first met Calaway in May 1990 when he returned to WCW after being fired. He was paired with Calaway while Ole Anderson served as the head of creative for WCW. Heyman strongly disagreed with Anderson's assessment of Calaway's potential.
When Calaway's WCW contract came up for renewal in September 1990, the company attempted to lowball him. Heyman then snuck Calaway into a meeting with Vince McMahon through a mutual friend at WWE. This action violated Heyman's contract with Turner Broadcasting and WCW.
The meeting resulted in Calaway signing with WWE and debuting as The Undertaker. Heyman explained that he took the risk because WCW failed to recognize Calaway's talent.
