The matchup stems from their months-long feud that escalated after Owens accidentally hit Punk with the WWE title during a defense against Sami Zayn in Mexico City. Punk later cost Owens a title opportunity, both competed in the Money in the Bank ladder match where Owens stopped Punk from retrieving the briefcase, and both demanded the bout that SmackDown GM Nick Aldis booked for November 6.
