Maclin Says WWE Release Inspired Ruthless TNA Character
“The day I got let go from WWE, of course we talked then. But I instantly knew, ‘Cool, let’s get to work and prove to the world of who the f*ck I am.’— Steve Maclin

Steve Maclin explained that his 2021 release from WWE directly inspired the ruthless character he brought to TNA that June. He highlighted the stark contrast between his on-screen villainous approach and his real-life personality, which made his time in TNA particularly enjoyable.

Maclin stated that he seized every major opportunity presented to him and aimed to excel, noting he became TNA World champion, a two-time TNA International champion and the first to achieve that distinction. He added that he pitched creative ideas whenever possible but committed fully to whatever direction the company chose, striving to deliver performances that engaged fans whether they cheered or booed him.

Maclin expressed that he particularly relishes being hated because it allows him to get under people's skin, which is the opposite of his true self outside of wrestling where he simply has fun nitpicking. The former champion addressed working under shifting TNA leadership including Scott D'Amore, Ariel Shnerner and Carlos Silva, along with various creative teams, but insisted he never allowed those changes to derail his goals.

Maclin noted the presence of familiar figures such as Jimmy Jacobs now working behind the scenes at Maple Leaf Pro and D'Lo Brown remaining involved, emphasizing the importance of trust and relationship-building throughout the industry. In June he ended his five-year run with TNA, citing creative frustrations as a primary reason for his departure.
