JBL Praises 30-Year Friendship With Savio Vega

“I had a great relationship with Savio. Savio was my trial match, just happened by happenstance. You couldn't ask for a better person to wrestle with then Savio.— JBL
JBL reflected on his on-screen rivalry with Savio Vega that began at WWE SummerSlam in 1996, noting that their real-life friendship has now lasted 30 years. The WWE Hall of Famer spoke enthusiastically about their bond during an appearance on "Something to Wrestle."
JBL described Vega as his trial match that came about by happenstance. He stated that one could not ask for a better person to work with than Vega, calling him an incredible worker. JBL added that he does not know anybody who has ever had anything bad to say about Vega.
Triple H used to call Vega "bumblebee" because bumblebees are not supposed to be able to fly, JBL recalled. Vega would get up to the top rope and perform moves that seemed to defy physics, much like the nickname suggested. JBL said Vega could actually fly and do things that physics indicated he should not be able to do.
Today JBL and Vega work closely together in WWE's sister promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Vega serves as one of its producers. He also works as a color commentator and translator alongside JBL.
