William Regal Urges Wrestlers To Sell Pins And Kickouts Better

“We are portraying trained pro fighters with instincts. If you don't win you would make less money in the story we're telling. Please pin and kick out like your life and career depend on it.— William Regal
William Regal shared advice for wrestlers on how to better sell pin attempts and kickouts during matches. The longtime industry veteran emphasized that wrestlers are portraying trained professional fighters with instincts.
He stressed that in the story being told, failing to win would result in earning less money. Regal urged performers to treat every pin and kickout in television matches as if their life and career depended on it, especially since cameras focus closely on those moments.
As an example, Regal pointed to an early 2000s match between AJ Styles and Amazing Red. In that bout, both competitors applied pins aggressively by fully covering and stacking their opponent's shoulders.
Regal observed that each subsequent kickout in the match was delivered with equal force. He believes this approach to selling pins and kickouts has been lost over the past 20 years.
He encouraged wrestlers not to insult the intelligence of audiences who invest their time. Regal compared wrestling to fight scenes in movies, noting that visible lack of effort would cause viewers to stop watching.
Regal, who competed for multiple decades before retiring, made the comments after working in the business for 42 years. He has remained involved in wrestling in a non-wrestling role since his 2013 retirement match.
