Will Ospreay Says Wrestling Has Evolved Past Full Kayfabe

“I mean it can still be done to this day and age for sure. It can be, but just like, I think, you don’t go into like a cinema. I like the Avengers and like Spider-Man and I love Batman. I don’t go into those things and instantly just go, well, ‘they’re not protecting the business.’— Will Ospreay
Will Ospreay believes professional wrestling has evolved beyond the need for full kayfabe protection in 2026. He noted that while certain elements should still remain protected, the industry no longer requires the strict maintenance of character that was once standard.
Ospreay compared modern wrestling to films such as those featuring Avengers, Spider-Man, and Batman. He explained that audiences enter those stories knowing they are fictional yet allow themselves to become immersed without questioning the protection of the craft.
According to Ospreay, wrestlers perform as characters when entering an arena to present a show. Social media sometimes extends this performance, with wrestlers staying in character to cut promos and promote events across platforms.
He expressed reservations about programs that reveal backstage aspects of wrestling companies. Ospreay stated that some information, including time cues and commercial break details, should not be shared with fans as it detracts from the experience.
Ospreay described excessive backstage exposure as resembling an ego-driven display focused on those working behind the camera rather than enhancing the product for viewers.
