Swerve Strickland Claims Highest In-Ring Level For Black Wrestler
“I'm being me. My success in pro-wrestling is genuinely because of my ability in the ring. It's not because they're trying to push an agenda, it's because I perform at a really, really high level — probably the highest level you could see of a Black wrestler in the history of the game.— Swerve Strickland
Swerve Strickland discussed his in-ring abilities and compared himself to several WWE legends. In a recent interview, he emphasized that his success stems from his genuine performance in the ring rather than any external agenda or persona.
Strickland stated that he performs at the highest level seen from a Black wrestler in the history of the sport. He expressed a desire to be remembered for his authentic approach and ring work instead of being viewed as a caricature.
He noted that while wrestlers such as Mark Henry, Booker T, Ron Simmons, and Dwayne Johnson became household names, they were not typically considered the best in-ring performers on their shows. Those wrestlers competed against top technical talents including Eddie Guerrero, Owen Hart, Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels.
Strickland claimed that he competes at the highest level against top opponents including Okada, Kenny Omega, Will Ospreay, and Hangman Adam Page. He approaches his work with the same emphasis on purity and ability that he applies to his hip-hop career.
The former AEW World Champion and Trios Champion recently lost his title at AEW WrestleDream 2026.
