Sami Zayn Discusses Second WWE Title Reign

“It’s cool. Yeah, here’s the thing that’s funny about it because even at the start of this year, which was nine months ago, ten months ago now, whatever, I was wrestling Drew, and I didn’t win.— Sami Zayn
Sami Zayn is currently in his second reign as WWE Undisputed Champion after defeating CM Punk on SmackDown last month. Zayn sat down with Insight with Chris Van Vliet to discuss becoming a two-time world champion. Zayn said it was cool to reflect on the achievement and noted that even at the start of this year about nine or ten months ago he was wrestling Drew and did not win the title.
He recalled being close to winning the championship a couple of years ago during the Bloodline storyline and in its aftermath but felt after losing to Drew that the Cinderella underdog story could not be told again. Zayn explained that the audience could only be brought on board for that narrative once twice or three times and it was not the right time because he lacked the momentum from a year or two earlier.
He described struggling to accept that he may have missed the window and that it simply would not happen adding that he has told friends his wife and others he has had a tremendous career where winning the world title would be a cherry on top but is not essential.
He emphasized that a lot has to happen to win the WWE Championship even when doing good work and there is no such thing as a fluke win.
