Sami Zayn Details Name Ideas Presented In NXT

“I didn’t know what they wanted out of me, so I sort of had these categories.— Sami Zayn
Sami Zayn explained that before joining WWE NXT he had been performing as El Generico on the independent circuit and was unsure what character the promotion wanted from him upon signing. During a conversation with Chris Van Vliet on the Insight podcast Zayn revealed there was initial discussion about a masked character for him in NXT.
Zayn said he prepared multiple categories of name ideas because he did not know what direction NXT officials envisioned for him after seeing his independent work. He noted that his red hair could support an Irish persona such as being presented as Sheamus's cousin while his French Canadian Arab and Mexican wrestling background offered other avenues including masked options.
Zayn described viewing his ethnicity and religion as central to his identity and saw a major opportunity to portray an Arab character in a way that had not been done before in WWE. He recounted growing up in the West with an Arab Muslim household yet appearing as a white kid and wanting to break stereotypes that were especially prevalent in the post 9/11 era where Arab portrayals were often normalized as negative caricatures.
When the topic of Muhammad Hassan was raised as an example of a previous Arab heel caricature Zayn agreed noting that Hassan was not actually Arab.
