Michael PS Hayes Explains 1984 Freebirds WWE Exit
“What really happened was we walked out. Buddy [Roberts] and [I] came back, and then Vince [McMahon] and [I] were going to talk, because I don't think Vince ever really wanted all the Freebirds. I think he just wanted [me] to do the Rock 'N Roll thing.— Michael PS Hayes

Michael P.S. Hayes clarified details about the Fabulous Freebirds' abrupt exit from WWE in 1984 during an interview on "What's Your Story? With Steph McMahon." Hayes stated that he and Buddy Roberts walked out while Terry Gordy remained initially. He noted that Vince McMahon wanted him specifically to pursue a Rock 'N Roll character rather than bringing in the entire Freebirds group.

At the time Vince McMahon showed interest, Hayes had an existing deal with Electric Records. Hayes described his personal philosophy of departing a promotion once he gained traction there. The group was staying at the Vero Moda Inn near Madison Square Garden when Gordy expressed his doubts to Hayes after having drinks.

Later the men were at an airport in Pittsburgh where they altered their flights due to Gordy. That change led to an encounter with André the Giant at the airport. Hayes recalled the trio hiding behind pillars hoping André would not notice them.

Hayes had previously gotten in trouble when André served as an agent running a show in Youngstown, Ohio. The Freebirds were staying in Columbus and Hayes believed he was off that day so he consumed about ten or twelve beers along with some Valium.
