Matt Hardy Says Jeff Refused Storylines Leading to 2001-02 WWE Absence
“There was a storyline for our characters, and they wanted us to split up. And there was a couple things that we were asked to do, and Jeff was uncomfortable and didn’t want to do it. So we were off TV for a while, as a punishment, I guess.— Matt Hardy

Matt Hardy revealed that he and Jeff were removed from WWF television in late 2001 and early 2002 after Jeff declined to participate in proposed storylines that included splitting up the team. The brothers along with Lita were written off following attacks by The Undertaker in December 2001 and stayed off TV until the Royal Rumble on January 20 2002 while still performing at non-televised live events. Matt described the removal as punishment but noted officials later reunited them since the duo was not prepared to break up.
