Matt Hardy discussed AJ Styles potentially stepping into a backstage role with WWE NXT on his podcast The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy. Hardy expressed that Styles possesses the necessary experience and mindset to thrive in such a position. He noted that rumors about Styles taking over NXT had circulated for several months, leaving him unsurprised by the development.
Hardy observed Styles' temperament and approach to the wrestling business after considering retirement, stating that his goal appeared to be remaining involved behind the scenes to assist emerging talent. "That had been the word on the street for a few months [Styles to take over NXT], too, so I'm not surprised by it," Hardy said.
Styles previously performed some agent duties during a visit to TNA, where he called matches and directed camera shots, according to Hardy. Hardy highlighted Styles' calm demeanor, noting that he rarely loses his temper and maintains a chill attitude, which would serve him effectively in the role.
Hardy, who aims to become a booker once his in-ring career concludes, believes Styles' versatility in working various wrestling styles will aid him in imparting knowledge to young NXT performers. He acknowledged that Styles faces a learning curve in fully committing to these duties for the first time but praised his positive and optimistic outlook.
Hardy added that Styles' extensive independent scene background will help him guide NXT talents arriving from diverse athletic and sports origins.
