Maria Kanellis Details 2017 WWE Return Path

“Okay, I’ll try and cut it short. So we’re in Ring of Honor. We’re doing all this new Japan stuff. It’s incredible, but we’ve kind of met our ceiling.— Maria Kanellis
Maria Kanellis discussed the path that led to her and Mike Bennett signing with WWE in 2017. The pair had been working in TNA following a period in Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro-Wrestling where they felt they had reached their ceiling by the end of 2015.
A call from TNA writer David Lagana brought them to the promotion with a promise of main storyline placement and creative control. Kanellis was able to shape her character while Bennett adopted the persona of The Miracle during their time there.
TNA featured a strong roster that year including Bobby Lashley, Drew McIntyre, The Hardys, and Bullet Club members. Kanellis and Bennett found themselves involved in various storylines, often positioned as figures who helped elevate others.
Their work culminated in the wedding storyline for Laurel Van Ness, portrayed by Chelsea Green, alongside Braxton. The segment featured strong performances from all involved including Allysin Kay and others, with the crowd remaining loud throughout.
Kanellis left the ring dressed dramatically and screaming, creating a memorable visual that was captured in a notable photo. This angle directly led to a phone call from WWE that resulted in their signing in June 2017 and return at Money in the Bank.
