John Cena Rejects 'Own Terms' Retirement Narrative
“If I have my own story to paint and doing it on my own terms, I'd like to do this forever.— John Cena

John Cena lost his final WWE match by tapping out to a sleeper hold from GUNTHER at Saturday Night's Main Event in December 2025. The bout concluded a year-long retirement tour during which Cena turned heel for the first time in decades and captured a world championship for the 17th time.

Cena discussed his transition from wrestling during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while promoting his film Matchbox: The Movie. He compared his acting career to his time in WWE, describing both as fragile occupations that eventually come to an end.

The retired wrestler stated that he would continue performing indefinitely if he could control the narrative. Cena rejected the idea that he retired on his own terms, explaining that his preference would be to wrestle forever but that the timing required him to step away.

He emphasized the importance of doing good work and leaving on a positive note while acknowledging the need to be realistic about when it is time to move on. Since retiring from in-ring competition, Cena has served as the face of the Club WWE brand.

Cena also announced the John Cena Classic, a tournament featuring WWE NXT stars competing against main roster talent.
