Ilja Dragunov's WWE contract expired in August and he chose not to renew it before joining AEW, where he made his debut at WrestleDream. The former NXT UK and NXT Champion told Ariel Helwani he first started thinking about departing around April or even a month earlier, after his ACL recovery title reign ended and creative directions did not align with what he hoped for beyond championship stories. He emphasized that it did not affect his work ethic as he loves the business.
