John Cena Explains Benefits of WWE's PG Era

“Well, here’s the good thing about PG: you can ship it anywhere.— John Cena
John Cena discussed the transition to the PG Era in WWE during an appearance on a talk show. He described the rebranding process as one that required significant time to gain acceptance.
Cena noted that the PG rating allowed WWE programming to be distributed globally. Many countries restrict content rated PG-13 or higher, making the family-friendly approach essential for international expansion.
He explained that it took approximately 15 years for audiences worldwide to embrace wrestling under the new rating. This shift coincided with the rise of social media platforms and content creation around 2008.
Cena highlighted how wrestlers were previously viewed as carnival performers without mainstream legitimacy. The emergence of multiple avenues for success through digital content changed perceptions and provided wrestlers with greater influence and opportunities.
According to Cena, WWE capitalized on these changes, resulting in highly engaging social media accounts and audiences. The data demonstrated substantial growth that could not be overlooked.
He added that attending live wrestling events became more socially acceptable over time. What was once something people admitted to seeing but not following evolved into an openly embraced activity.
