JBL Explains Why Vince McMahon Refused To Turn John Cena Heel
“You wonder why they never turned Cena? 'Cause they turned [Stone Cold Steve] Austin, and Austin was, the merch that Austin – Steve – was selling was ridiculous, and Vince learned his lesson.— John Bradshaw Layfield
John Bradshaw Layfield said Vince McMahon refused to turn John Cena heel because he had previously turned Stone Cold Steve Austin heel and watched Austin's merchandise sales suffer as a result. JBL recalled sitting in multiple meetings where the idea of Cena turning heel was raised only for McMahon to immediately reject it. Cena remained WWE's top babyface throughout McMahon's tenure and only worked as a heel after TKO took over.
